Norm Stamper was a police officer for 34 years and served as chief of the Seattle Police Department from 1994 to 2000. He is the author of Breaking Rank: A Top Cop’s Expose of the Dark Side of American Policing (Nation Books, 2005). A supporter of legalizing and regulating drugs, he serves on the advisory boards of NORML and Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). Stamper is an eloquent advocate of the need for fundamental reforms in policing. He points to the twin wars on terror and on drugs as having spurred what he calls a regrettable “militarization” of police work. In a recent article in The Nation, Stamper wrote about the “SWAT mentality” that can lead to “a vital public-safety institution perpetually at war with its own people.” Join ACLU-WA members and friends for a forum on “Safe and Just Policing,” featuring Stamper, on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 pm at Town Hall Seattle in downtown Seattle at 1119 8th Ave. Following Stamper’s talk and a Q & A period, there will be a reception with Stamper, ACLU-WA leaders, and light refreshments – a great opportunity to meet other ACLU supporters and continue the discussion. The event is free (with donations requested) and open to ACLU members and the general public. Parking Vouchers The Washington State Convention Center Main Garage is located 2 blocks north of Town Hall on 8th Ave. This garage is available both daytime ($8 all day) and evenings ($4 after 5pm) with a special voucher you can get from any ACLU volunteer or member of the Town Hall staff at the forum. Just ask for a voucher while you are attending the event and receive the discount when you leave the garage. Date:
